Honorific titles were granted to Liao emperors when they ascended the throne or during their reign, reflecting the combination of the nomadic political and cultural traditions of the northern grasslands and the Tang Dynasty system of an-cient China. This was an important aspect of the ritual system of the Liao Dynasty.During the reigns of Liao emperors,numer-ous and excessive words were used in honorific titles, most of which were closely related to external military actions, reflecting changes in the Liao Dynasty’s foreign relations. In the first year of Emperor Taizu’s reign title“Shence”(916),the honorific title represented the transformation of Abaoji from a khan of the grasslands to a monarch ruling both the Han people and no-madic tribes in a country consisting of settled and nomadic regions. Therefore,Abaoji’s focus shifted toward expansion into ag-ricultural areas. In the first year of Emperor Taizong’s reign title“Huitong”(938),his honorific title marked that the Liao Dy-nasty had made the Later Jin Dynasty its subject and had begun to compete for territory in the Central Plains.During the reigns of Emperor Shengzong and Emperor Xingzong, honorific titles reflected changes in the Liao Dynasty’s relationships with the Northern Song,Goryeo(Korea),and Western Xia.Honorific titles were a manifestation of emperors’self-aggrandizement and subjects’flattery in the Liao Dynasty, presenting a false appearance of peace and prosperity. However,as a political measure to deify the emperors, they still played a role in consolidating the rule of the Khitan nobility.
