Final vitrification of monatomic metals

摘  要:In a paper very recently published on Nature Materials,the group led by Bai and Wang [1] successfully vitrified several face-centered cubic(fcc) and hexagonal close-packed(hcp)monatomic metals by a rapid cooling with a method of picosecond pulsed laser ablation in a liquid medium.This work is a new breakthrough in the vitrification of monatomic metals,giving a firm positive answer to the famous question raised by Turnbull [2] in 1950s:do all materials form glasses? To answer this question,huge effort has been dedicated in the past several decades,especially for metals.
