The coexistence of metabolic syndrome(MS)in people living with HIV(PLWH)has emerged as a major public health issue, attracting considerable attention. The pathogenesis of MS in PLWH remains unclear.Numerous studies have indicated a complex interplay between combination antiretroviral therapy(cART)and the various components of MS,making it crucial to understand the relationship between MS and cART usage.Different cART regimens pose different risks for the development of MS in PLWH and have different effects on different components of the syndrome. However, research findings on this topic remain inconsistent. This article reviews the effects of cART drugs on the individual components of MS,including their effects on body weight, blood glucose, blood lipids, and blood pressure levels, with the aim of using the specific characteristics of different cART regimens to tailor individual treatment plans for patients.Such personalization could help to reduce cardiovascular morbidity and mortality, thereby improving the quality of lifeof PLWH.
