The routes across the Congling Mountains on the Silk Road were essential pathways for ancient China's communications with Central Asia and India, and they represent a significant gap in both domestic and international Silk Road research.Since von Richthofen's first mapped two routes across the Congling Mountains, most Silk Road route maps have followed his depiction. In reality, there should be three main ancient routes traversing the Congling region from east to west:the Northern Route, the Central Route, and the Southern Route. This article briefly describes the basic conditions of these three routes on the Congling Mountains and attempts to categorize and restore records of ancient Chinese travelers on these routes from historical Chinese texts. It aims to deepen understanding of the ancient transportation conditions in the Congling region and provide new perspectives and insights into related historical figures and events.
