Margaret Atwood's political novel Bodily Harm, with its second half focusing on a democratic election in a former British colony in the Caribbean area, accurately represents the country's post-independence political complexity. On the internal politics front, the conservative ruling party which advocates liberalism and the opposition party which advocates radical traditionalism constitute the"left and right"camps, signifying the hidden nature of the new hierarchical democracy which is now replacing the old colonial system. The hybridists who attach high importance to cultural boundaries and globalization have established another opposition party based on mixed-race identity, revealing the paradoxical nature of the concepts of decolonization and its political practice. On the international politics front, after the British"withdrawal",the US and Cuba became the new geopolitical players in the Caribbean area, indicating the reset of the hegemonic system.By putting nationality and regionality, concreteness and universality into a continuous literary experience,Atwood re-examines the multilayer logic of native politics, cultural boundaries, and international relations, and criticized the ideological bias behind the globalization of Western liberal and democratic systems.
