摘 要:西周金文中可隶定为“■”的字,一般释为“遗”,但此字无论字形还是用法,都与真正的“遗”不合,释“遗”实不可信。根据字形线索,并结合辞例,本文认为“■”应释为赠送之“送”字。This paper identifies the character送in early excavated documents. From a visual perspective, the characters found in Western Zhou bronze inscriptions commonly deciphered as yí遗“to lose, drop”or wèi遗“to present”can be categorized into two types. The first type is written GFAE0,which definitely should be interpreted as遗,while the other type is strictly transcribed as ■,similar to the graphic forms of GFAE0 and遗,but is never used for the word{遗}in the context of“omission”or“loss”.Therefore, the usual decipherment and interpretation of ■ can be questioned.Based on the visual clues and contextual evidence, this paper proposes that ■ is the written form of character sòng送“present, send, escort”in the Western Zhou.In Western Zhou bronze inscriptions,it is used to convey the meanings of giving or presenting as well as sending or escorting. The elucidation of the character送in this study accounts for the apparent absence of the word{送}in early excavated documents hitherto and provides a more comprehensive understanding of its graphic origin and development.
