“天地悠悠之念”:纽约体验与白先勇《纽约客》的创生

摘  要:“天地悠悠之念”是白先勇的文学创作从“纽约故事”到“纽约客”系列转变的重要表征,与作家本人的纽约体验息息相关。此前研究对这一概念的阐发有所忽略。通过对白先勇在纽约的“冷/热”感知体验与《纽约客》文本的对读,可以归纳出“冷/热”的隐喻系统,进而囊括历史“冷却”的时间跨度,构设“天地悠悠之念”的生成条件,并在“醉酒时刻”的意义上阐发“天地悠悠之念”的最终生成。“天地悠悠之念”作为白先勇及其笔下人物共享的“纽约客”感觉结构的展现,在《纽约客》文本中得到了凸显和赋形。在此意义上,“天地悠悠之念”同时可以作为进入白先勇其它文学文本的路径,而对“变”中之“不变”的“纽约客”感觉结构的捕捉也为白先勇提出了新的挑战。‘The Concept of Vastness between Heaven and Earth’is an important representation in Pai Hsien-yung’s literary creation of the transition from‘New York stories’to the“The New Yorkers”series as it is closely related to his own experience in New York although previous research somehow ignored the explication of this concept.A comparative reading of the sensation of Pai’s experience of cold and heat in New York,and of the text in New Yorkers can arrive at a summation of the metaphoric system of cold and heat,thus including the time span of the cooling down of history,conceptualizing the generative conditions of‘the concept of vastness between heaven and earth’,and explicating the final genesis of that concept in the moment when one gets drunk.‘The concept of vastness between heaven and earth’,as a revelation of the sensory structure of the New Yorkers as shared between Pai Hsien-yung and his characters,is accentuated and shaped in the text of The New Yorkers.In that sense,‘the concept of vastness between heaven and earth’can be viewed as a pathway to the other literary texts of Pai Hsien-yung,and the capture of the sensory structure in the New Yorkers that change when remaining unchanged also present a new challenge for Pai.
