In explaining the associative behavior of tropical tunas,the"log-indicator"hypothesis suggests that logs tends to stay near productive waters such as ocean fronts, but it has not yet been proven. In order to examine the influence of ocean front on log-associated schools, this study used the sea surface temperature(SST)and sea surface salinity(SSS)data of the Western and Central Pacific Ocean from 1993 to 1997,and Western and Central Pacific Fisheries Commission(WCPFC)tuna Seine catch data, the absolute gradient index was used to quantitatively characterize the strength of ocean temperature front and salinity front, and to analyze the distribution difference of log-associated schools and freeswimming schools in different temperature and salinity gradient ranges. The results show that the ocean temperature front has a stronger aggregation effect on the log-associated schools, while the free-swimming schools tend to gather near the salinity front. The results of this study can provide practical experience for better understanding of the"log-indicator"hypothesis and the mechanism of associative behavior in tropical tunas.
