摘　　要：乔纳森·麦戈文博士在2022年出版之新书《都铎郡守:近代早期行政研究》重现了中世纪晚期至都铎一朝郡守制的结构、运作和职权沿革,论证了都铎郡守制未曾衰微,实为地方同步于中央政府变革的行政效率调整;更以“政治社会史”为新视野,整体检视了近代早期央地关系。这项地方行政史的研究填补了20世纪晚期以降都铎政治史研究偏重实践、社会网络与精英阶层的空白,宣告了制度史的回归。但关于制度的实际落实差距、社会因素与政治体制之间的因果关系,乃至于地域与士绅阶层的主体性,仍存在研究空间。In this newly comprehensive research on Tudor shrievalty in 2022,Jonathan McGovern redefines its multiple reforms not as shrieval decline in both political and social status,but rather as a subject of collaboration between central government and local authorities to make the sheriff system more efficient and less corruptible.And using an innovative method of the“social history of politics,”he further explores the relations of the local to the Tudor regime.This study of Tudor local administration marks the return to the conventional historiography of official institutions,shifting the focus of the investigation from the emergent concerns around political activities,social networks and ruling elites since the late 20th century.However,some issues have received little attention:the inconsistency between rules,procedures and practices,the interaction between political activities and social factors,as well as the self-identity of the localities and landed-gentry rank.
