As one of the initiators of the women's liberation movement in the United States during the 1960s,as well as a Marxist and an experienced mental health counselor,Dr.Harriet Fraad's ideas are rooted in a combination of feminism,Marxism and psychoanalysis. She explains the widespread depression and anxiety among contemporary American youth from a political-economic perspective, and analyzes domestic labor and the crisis of the nuclear family from a class-based perspective, which helps to understand the difficulties of marriage and parenthood for young people, especially young women.Through the dual lenses of history and reality,Dr.Fraad observes that contemporary American youth are facing the challenge and opportunity of“disconnection”and“reconnection”.With the shattering of the American dream and the bleakness of the future, contemporary American youth are turning to social movements, where they share the same value for democracy and equality.Dr.Fraad believes that in order to truly bring about substantial social change, people have to unite more closely and rebuild connections with each other.
