The cicada-patterned gold pendants unearthed from tombs of the Eastern and Western Jin Dynasties and the Sixteen Kingdoms are likely important components of what is recorded in literature as“diao chan”or“diao dang”.Such cicada-patterned gold pendants are combined with sable tails and fixed together on hats, symbolizing the identity of ministers trusted by the emperor.Meanwhile, during the Eastern and Western Jin dynasties, emperors would bestow“diao chan” as a reward upon certain high-ranking officials when they were promoted,or deceased meritorious officials when they were buried.Therefore,cicada-patterned gold pendants also have important political significance.
