Edmund Spenser's preoccupation with ruins and monuments remained consistent throughout his career. Ruins not only refer to physical remnants but also symbolize the inner state of human decline. Monuments built upon ruins possess both material and immaterial attributes. The material monument serves as a symbol resisting the passage of time, extending ephemeral worldly values and attempting to pursue a form of mortal immortality. In contrast, the immaterial monument aims to convey virtue and explore the eternal nature of the spirit. The moral connotations of ruins and monuments underpin Spencer's allegorical poetic writing of British national history in his epic, constructing a national ethical narrative centered on the virtue of temperance. Spencer utilizes the narrative of British national history and temperance as a political and moral justification for the colonial conquests and expansions of the English Empire.
