Objective To address the frequent mental health issues among university students by establishing a comprehensive quantitative dynamic detection system to accurately assess anxiety levels. Methods We utilized State-Trait Anxiety Inventory(STAI) and salivary cortisol measurements through examining the intervention effects of eight art-based expressive activities among 86 students from Beijing Institute of Fashion Technology,in order to assess the auxiliary diagnostic value of salivary cortisol for anxiety. Results Art-based expressive activities significantly reduced anxiety levels in both afternoon and evening sessions. In the afternoon intervention, salivary cortisol levels in the intervention group decreased significantly(P<0.001),while no significant change was observed in the control group(P>0.05);Similar effects were noted in the evening intervention(P<0.0001).Furthermore,trait anxiety(TAI) and state anxiety(SAI) scores were positively correlated(r=0.843,P<0.001).Conclusion This study preliminarily demonstrates that art-based expressive activities effectively alleviate anxiety, suggesting salivary cortisol as a potential biomarker for anxiety levels.
