摘　　要：托马斯·哈代在《卡斯特桥市长》中塑造的女性人物伊丽莎白·简,代表了哈代对女性社会角色的新认识,不仅反映了他对时代变革的敏锐关注,更彰显了他对女性的肯定与尊重。文章全方位、多角度分析伊丽莎白·简所呈现的人物特点,探究作者如何通过该角色刻画“新女性”意识的萌芽,进而揭示小说的深层社会意义,凸显该角色在哈代文学作品中的重要地位。Elizabeth Jane,the female character created by Thomas Hardy in The Mayor of Casterbridge,represents his new understanding of women's social roles.It not only reflects Hardy's acute attention to the changes of the times,but also highlights his affirmation and respect for women.Therefore,this paper analyzes the character characteristics presented by Elizabeth Jane from a comprehensive and multi-angle,explores how the author portrays the budding consciousness of“new women”through this character,and then reveals the deep social significance of the novel,highlighting the important position of this character in Hardy's literary works.
