摘  要:以1903年张謇东游日本为界,将东游前界定为张謇对日交流的早期。张謇早期对日交流开始于1883年,但交流对象少,交流内容有限,处于被动、边缘的位置;1894年张謇高中状元后,他依靠沪上士人的社交圈与日方一些人士接触,吸取了日本明治维新的很多宝贵知识和经验;1901年朝日新闻社记者西村时彦撰写报道《张殿撰之变法平议》发表于《大阪朝日新闻》后,张謇开始出现在日本大众视线之中并拥有一定的国际声望。张謇从不受日本政府、民间重视到登上国际舞台,这种转变的根源就在于庚子国变后张謇政治地位的上升,而其中的关键因素就是他作为地方督抚刘坤一重要智囊的身份。ZHANG Jian’s early exchanges with Japan,which refers to the period before his eastward journey to Japan in 1903,began in 1883 when there were few to communicate with and little to exchange.As a result,he failed to take much initiative and was marginalized in communication.In and after 1894,when he became the number one scholar in the imperial examination,he was able to make contact with some Japanese by drawing support from the social circles of Shanghai scholars,absorbing a lot of valuable knowledge and experience of the Meiji Restoration.In 1901,when Toshihiko Nishimura,a reporter for The Asahi Shimbun,wrote the article ZHANG Jian’s Comments on Reform published in the Osaka Asahi Shimbun,ZHANG Jian began to be recognized by the Japanese public and earn some international reputation.The crucial reason for ZHANG Jian’s political advancement after the Gengzi National Crisis(the crisis year of 1900 involving the Boxer uprising and the eight-nation military invasion)was that he served as a brain truster of LIU Kunyi,a local civil and military governor,contributing to his shift from being undervalued by the Japanese government and public to stepping onto the international stage.
