摘　　要：约翰·罗伯特·西利是19世纪后期英国著名历史学家,英国历史学专业化的重要倡导者和推进者。西利反对以麦考莱为代表的文学性历史写作,提倡科学的历史学。同时,西利相信历史与政治的紧密关系,强调历史研究即为政治研究,宣称历史是一门关于国家的科学,历史也是培养政治家才能的学校。西利具有强烈的现实关怀,其对英国扩张的探讨,不仅回应了其时英帝国面临的问题,也对英国人的帝国情感和后来帝国史研究产生了深远影响。John Robert Seeley was one of famous British historians in the late 19th century,a vital advocate and promoter of the specialization of history in Britain.Seeley opposed the literary history represented by T.B.Macaulay and advocated scientific history.At the same time,he believed in the close relationship between history and politics,stressing that the study of history was the study of politics,claiming that history was a sci-ence about states and history was a school for statesmanship.Seeley expressed a strong realistic concern in his works,his exploration of the expansion of England was also a response to the problems faced by British Em-pire,and had a profound influence on British imperial sentiment and later researches concerning empire.
