The Western Sichuan Plateau is characterized by significant topographic elevation differences, intense plate activities, frequent mountain disasters,a sensitive ecological environment, harsh climate conditions, prominent deep-seated adverse geology, and difficult construction support.Based on the basic data of vertical-spindle drills and full-hydraulic drills in deep-hole drilling in the complex mountainous areas of the plateau, this paper compares the two types of drills in terms of purchase and operation and maintenance costs, performance characteristics, workload completed, drilling efficiency, environmental adaptability,accident-handling ability, and comprehensive economic benefits under the same environment and geological conditions, analyzing their respective advantages and disadvantages. The conclusion is that full-hydraulic drills have obvious advantages in terms of labor intensity, safety protection, installation and transportation, and automation and intelligence. They operate more smoothly, have higher drilling efficiency, and can save more costs, thus enabling safe, efficient, and cost-effective construction. This can provide a reference for geological exploration of deep and ultra-deep holes at high altitudes on the plateau.
