In The Merchant of Venice,Shakespeare’s depiction of two father-daughter relationships offers a nuanced portrayal of female self-awareness.The female characters reject the notion of being treated as paternal“possessions”or“appendages,”thereby contesting patriarchal norms.Although their resistance is ultimately subsumed by their submission to their husbands—symbols of patriarchal authority—Shakespeare’s representation of female voices and his implicit endorsement of gender equality reflect a progressive and forward-thinking ideology.
