With the proliferation of social media in rural areas, the intergenerational digital divide has become increasingly prominent.Addressing how to bridge this gap through proxy-based reverse mentoring while mitigating its negative impacts has become an urgent issue.Based on an extended UTAUT model, this study explores the dual impacts and their causes of proxy-based reverse mentoring on rural parents'social media usage through 302 surveys and 12 in-depth interviews. The findings indicate that proxy-based reverse mentoring helps parents access the internet and enhances their life convenience in the short term, but may weaken their media independence, exacerbate internet dependency, and increase health risks in the long run.Although it improves intergenerational relationships to some extent, due to the lack of depth in interaction,it may also lead to contradictions and conflicts. The causes include parents’insufficient willingness and ability to learn, low initiative in reverse mentoring by children, and poor quality of parent-child interaction.
