River and lake health assessment is an important aspect of waterbody management and a key method for understanding the health status of rivers and lakes and identifying related issues. This paper focuses on the Dongjiang River mainstream in Guangdong Province, using data from 2017 and 2022.It conducts a comprehensive evaluation and comparison of the river’s health based on five aspects:river morphology, hydrological conditions, water quality, aquatic biology, and public satisfaction. The results show that the overall health score has decreased, from 65.3 in 2017 to 61.5 in 2022,with the overall health status still categorized as“healthy”.From the perspective of specific indicators, the functional status score increased, rising from 60.2 in 2017 to 67.7 in 2022,both classified as“healthy”.However, the ecological status score decreased from 67.5 in 2017 to 58.8 in 2022,shifting from“healthy”to“sub-healthy”.The findings provide valuable support for river managers to scientifically and dynamically understand the health status of rivers and lakes, and to develop corresponding management strategies.
