Bisphenol A(BPA),an environmental endocrine disruptor, can enter the human body through different exposure routes and have adverse effects on human health, such as reproductive toxicity, neurodevelopmental toxicity and even hormone-related tumors. The structure of BPA is similar to estrogen and it is highly toxic to reproduction. It may inhibit the levels of estrogen and progesterone in females and up-regulate androgen levels. At the same time,BPA may act on the body by affecting the homeostasis of cholesterol synthesis, altering sex steroid hormone-related pathways and impairing follicular function, thereby affecting sex hormone levels. The present paper mainly started from the effect of BPA on female sex hormones and reviewed the down-regulation of estrogen, progesterone and androgen in the body,as well as the mechanism of affecting the homeostasis of cholesterol synthesis, and these are helpful to clarify that bisphenol A can cause health damage by affecting sex hormones,to provide a more comprehensive solution for preventing the health hazards caused by these endocrine disruptors.
