During Su Shi's(苏轼)seven-year exile in the Lingnan Region(岭南,Huizhou[惠州]and Hainan Island[海南岛])he frequently copied out texts and attached his own colophons to those copies, commenting on them. The texts he chose to copy out were mostly ancient ones, rather than those by his contemporaries or those he himself had composed. These texts generally reflected his thoughts and strategies concerning the political situation at the imperial court during his seven years of exile.Among the most common ones were his transcription of biographies from The History of the Jin Dynasty(《晋书》).During his stay in Huizhou,Su Shi returned the kindness of several visiting monks by presenting them with calligraphic copies of these and other ancient texts, including, for example,Tao Yuanming's(陶渊明)poem,The Return(《归去来兮辞》),which he gave as a farewell gift to the novice monk Zhuo Qishun(卓契顺).His copying out of such ancient works, which were related to his own Poems in Response to Tao Yuanming's(《和陶诗》),may be viewed as a strategy for avoiding direct self-expression in poem writing to a certain extent when presenting texts to relative strangers, something that became particularly important for him during his Lingnan years. These two practices were intended to distance Su Shi from the writings he gave to others,a kind of self-protective buffer that reduced the possibility of further implicating him in the political machinations of his day.Su Shi's intimate friendship with Jiang Tangzuo(姜唐佐),on the other hand, resulted in a very different kind of calligraphic inscription that Su wrote out,one he did compose in his own words, which he probably never expected to circulate.Su's friendship with the younger Jiang Tangzuo became an indispensable part of the story of Su Shi's exile in Hainan Island.
