摘　　要：曼彻斯特是维多利亚现实主义作家伊丽莎白·盖斯凯尔多部小说中城市空间书写的主要现实来源。作为以曼彻斯特为北方工业城市原型的文学作品,《南方与北方》描摹了19世纪中期英国棉纺之都的多维景象。与工业革命的空前繁荣相伴而生的是城市的肮脏混乱,失序的城市空间促使焦虑的中产阶级寻求空间区隔,将住宅搬至郊外。然而小说中的资本家桑顿宅邸矗立于工厂旁侧,昭示其权力监督与规训的本质功能。面对岌岌可危的城市空间,盖斯凯尔试图借助会堂这一具有教育功能的空间载体解决工业无序发展带来的城市问题,构建和谐美好的城市空间。Manchester is the main source in reality for the urban space writing in many novels of Victorian realist writer Elizabeth Gaskell.As a literary work with Manchester as the prototype of the northern industrial city,North and South describes the multidimensional scenes of Cottonopolis of England in the mid-19th century.The unprecedented prosperity of the industrial revolution came with dirt and chaos in city space,which prompted the anxious middle class to seek spatial division and move their houses to the suburbs.The house of the mill owner Mr.Thornton in the novel stands next to his factory,showing its essential function of discipline and power supervision.Facing the precarious urban space,Gaskell attempts to solve the urban problems brought by the disorderly development of industry and build a harmonious and beautiful urban space with the help of the Lyceum,a space carrier with educational function.
