There exist a certain number of“fossil words”in ancient Chinese, which were produced when each language family of Huayi language family became independent. The“fossil words”,which represent personal names and place names, contain precious information codes of language, culture, history and geography. When they are passed down from generation to generation and enter the written Chinese language, the same word is written in many different ways due to the different recording times and local pronunciation.Since ancient times, there has been no credible answer to the question of how and when these“fossil words”came into being. This paper investigates 12“fossil words”representing personal names and place names, studies their generation mode and generation times, thus confirming some ancient legends and tracing the footprints of migration and differentiation of prehistoric Huayi ethnic groups.
