Climate change poses abig threat to economic growth and financial stability. This has attracted widespread concern from both governments and the public. This paper employs unbalanced panel data from 344 commercial banks in China over the period of 2008 to 2019 to empirically examine the impact of climate change on bank risk-taking.The study finds that:first,an increase in climate change shocks significantly raises the level of bank risk-taking,and this conclusion remains valid after addressing endogeneity issues and conducting robustness tests.Second, the cost of bank risk management is an important channel through which climate change shocks affect levels of risk-taking.Third,the impact of climate change on larger banks with lower capitalization is more pronounced. Finally, improvements in climate protection performance can mitigate the increase in bank risk-taking levels caused by climate change shocks, although the overall effect remains relatively weak. This research provides valuable insights for understanding the bank risk-taking under the influence of climate change shocks and for maintaining financial stability.
