Retirement is a major life event for the vast number of wage earners who support Japan’s“corporate center”society. At the same time, retirement as a system uses external force to remind the parties that they will enter the old age, requiring them to live a life that“matches”old age, making“old age”a standard discipline that restricts their thoughts and actions, causing building a“second life”after retirement is fraught with difficulties.Since the 1950s and 1960s,novels with the theme of retirement have appeared in Japan one after another, and many of them have appeared on bestseller lists, arousing resonance and heated discussions among readers. This article takes the best-selling novel on retirement as the perspective, analyzes the novel’s narration of the plight and dilemma of retirees, examines the characteristics and difficulties of establishing self-awareness in the elderly, reflects on the meaning of old age,and provides reference for us in an aging society to build a positive outlook on old age.
