摘 要:文章以夏志清集中讨论中国古典小说六大名著《三国演义》《水浒传》《西游记》《金瓶梅》《儒林外史》《红楼梦》的著作《中国古典小说史论》(中文版)为基础文本,从艺术性、思想性和研究方法三方面总结夏志清的中国古典小说史研究:一是以西律中的研究方法,以西方现实主义小说的艺术标准来衡量中国古典小说;二是道德批评往往胜于艺术批评,强调人的文学,着重对旧社会、旧思想的批判,延续五四精神传统。本文提出,从对中国小说结构、说书人传统的不满到人的文学的强调,夏志清对中国古典小说的评价不高与其说是崇洋媚外,不如说是感时忧国、恨其不争的心态,其偏颇处也正是其有力处,有着鲜明的个人特色与时代烙印。The article is based on Hsia Chih-ching’s Classic Chinese Novel:A Critical Introduction,which focuses on six classic Chinese novels,Romance of the Three Kingdoms,Water Margin,Journey to the West,The Plum in the Golden Vase,The Scholars,and Dream of the Red Chamber.It summarizes Hsia Chih-ching’s research on the history of Chinese classical fiction from three aspects:artistic,ideological,and methodological.The first is the research method in the West,evaluating Chinese classical novels using the artistic standard of Western realistic novels.The second is a focus on moral criticism,often taking precedence over artistic criticism,emphasizing humanistic literature,critiquing the old society and old ideas,and reflecting the spiritual tradition of the May Fourth Movement.From the dissatisfaction with the structure of Chinese novels and the tradition of storytellers to the emphasis on humanistic literature,Hsia Chih-ching’s low evaluation of Chinese classical novels stems less from blind admiration for foreign traditions and more from a deep concern for the times and their shortcomings.His biases also constitute his strength,marked by personal characteristics and the influence of his era.
