In the Scottish contemporary writer Alasdair Gray's novel Poor Things(1992),the protagonist Bella is diagnosed with“erotomania”and amnesia.Previous research has often overlooked the complex relationship between illness and power. In the novel, illness is not only a manifestation of personal struggle but also a reflection of power structures. In the context of body politics, illness reveals multiple meanings.Medical diagnoses appear to be measures for treatment and recovery, but they are,in fact, tools for the manipulation, normalization and medicalization of the body.Medical discourse both incorporates women into specific frameworks by correcting deviations and reinforces power control through exclusion. While the novel superficially presents an ideal of feminism,it profoundly unveils the illusions of feminism and the dilemmas faced by women, exploring issues of self-identity and autonomy for women within a male-dominated medical system.
