The experiment employed a solid-phase extraction and ultrasonic-microwave-assisted extraction method, along with ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography coupled with highresolution time-of-flight mass spectrometry,to identify and analyze fomesafen and its degradation products in soil. The main degradation products and metabolic pathways of fomesafen in the soil were hypothesized.Additionally, the impact of fomesafen and its degradation products on the growth of subsequent crops, specifically maize, and on PPO activity was analyzed, and the results indicated that the residual herbicide fomesafen in the soil had a significant inhibitory effect on subsequent maize growth, which intensified with increasing residue levels. In contrast, the degradation products of fomesafen exhibited a promoting effect on maize growth at low concentrations, but showed slight inhibitory effects as the concentration increased. However, this inhibition was significantly lower than the impact of fomesafen itself on the crops.
