As a renowned modern revolutionary activist and politician,Song Jiaoren purchased and read a large number of novels. He not only believed that novels could be"a tool for relieving troubles",but also emphasized the educational value of novels.Based on the mindset of"viewing it through an inherently good subjectivity"and the purpose of"aspiring to write a novel",Song Jiaoren endeavored to integrate the themes of The Dream of Red Mansion with his own insights. This approach endowed his reading of the Dream of Red Mansion with a strong sense of agency, creating a closed-loop reading process of anticipation, appreciation, recollection, and evaluation. It established a norm ofliterary critique centered on uncovering the rare value within novels, described as"even rare within fiction."Broadly speaking,by synthesizing various materials such as diaries, autobiographical accounts, and contemporaneous evaluations,it becomes evident that readers across generations have always filled certain"gaps"in fictional texts through their creative interpretations.Such reading practices help mediate the relationship between individual reader behavior and collective experience, thereby expanding both the focus and methodological approaches in the study of the history of Chinese fiction reading.
