摘　　要：引言。晚清著名小说家吴人(1866—1910)逝世后,有人作一挽联曰:“百战文坛真福将,十年前死是完人”^([1]102)。作者显然有嘲讽吴趼人的意思,说他晚节不保,毁了一世英名。吴趼人究竟失了什么“大节”呢?Wu Jianren,a professional writer in the late Qing Dynasty who"lived by his pen",prioritized quantity and sales of his work over quality,favoring bizarre and sensational anecdotes,which led to accusations of sensationalism.Lu Xun criticized his market-driven writing that catered to contemporary tastes as a"miscellaneous collection of gossip",condemning his practice of writing fake drug advertisements merely for profit,which made him loose the scholarly dignity and integrity.Reviewing Wu Jianren's literary journey,it becomes clear that the"Wo Fo Shan Ren(I was from Fo Shan)",praised as a renowned novelist,was actually one of the many"sea drifters"of the 19th century.His transition from a factory worker to a professional writer seemed to mark a change in identity and means of livelihood,but the shifting merely from laboring for factory owners to writing for publishers never changed the nature of his work:selling his labor.From the perspective of the cultural and literary ecology of the late Qing and early Republic period which is a transition period from the traditional literati society to an industrial and commercial era,writing for a living was re-examined as a means of livelihood which was no different from manual labor or farming,and a professional writer was just another kind of"laborer".In the fiercely competitive market environment,the contrast was striking between Wu Jianren's"forced writing"and"forced actions"and Lu Xun's"refusal to forced writing or actions".However,""Wo Fo Shan Ren's"bold defiance of conventions and prejudices in his professional and market-driven writing experiments opened a new chapter in history and provided multiple possibilities for the formation of modern independent intellectual groups,holding significant cultural and social historical value and deserved to be understood and respected.
