The Russo-Japanese War has not only profoundly affected the destiny of Japan and Russia as well as the course of world politics in the early 2Oth century, but also had a great impact on Australia.During the war,Australians maintained a contradictory mentality as reported by The Sydney Morning Herald,an Austrian newspaper. From the perspective of the Anglo-Japanese Alliance,it wished for Japan to quickly defeat Russia. However,as a dominion of Britain,it was also deeply concerned that Britain's policy of"supporting Japan against Russia"would draw it into the war, thereby compromising Australia's security.Judging from the reports, the newspaper exhibited considerable subjectivity and selectivity in constructing an image of the Russo-Japanese War for the Australian public, with a tendency of"downplaying Russia and highlighting Japan".Meanwhile, the reports clearly revealed the anxieties of the Australian ruling group about the future of the country and the nation, which in turn, subtly promoted the awakening and emergence of Australian national consciousness.Although Australia remained dependent on Britain at the time, the inter play and continuous evolution of these contradictory factors gradually foreshadowed the future of Australia-Britain relations.
