摘　　要：在19世纪美国历史转型与文化革新的背景下,霍桑强调文化传承与批判思维的重要性,试图通过历史书写探索更具超越性与包容性的文化观念及民族意识。在1853年至1860年的欧洲之旅中,霍桑通过实地探寻新英格兰的历史根脉以及感悟清教文化和欧洲古典文化传统之间的联系与冲突,得以在跨文化的语境中对自己的作家身份有了更为清晰的认知。在他看来,美国文学对于“新”与“旧”的选择不应是割裂的,而应是相互联系且有所取舍的:既要承袭清教文化“正义、真理和爱”的精神传统,又要汲取欧洲古典文学浪漫、自然的艺术韵味;既要具备现实因素和地域色彩,还应关注普遍的人类情感和道德困境。In the context of historical transformation and cultural innovation in the United States in the 19th century,Hawthorne empha⁃sized the importance of cultural inheritance and critical thinking,and tried to explore more transcendent and inclusive cultural con⁃cepts and national consciousness through historical writing.During his travels to Europe between 1853 and 1860,Hawthorne gained a clearer understanding of his identity as a writer in a cross-cultural context by exploring the historical roots of New England and under⁃standing the connections and conflicts between Puritan culture and classical European cultural traditions.In his view,the choice of“new”and“old”in American literature should not be separated,but interconnected and trade-offs.American literature should not on⁃ly inherit the spiritual tradition of“justice,truth and love”of Puritan culture,but also absorb the romantic and natural artistic charm of European classical literature.It should not only have a realistic factor and a regional color,but also pay attention to the universal hu⁃man emotional and moral dilemmas.
