Island communities are located in remote areas with limited transportation infrastructure and a significant elderly population, including many empty-nest seniors. This geographical isolation poses practical challenges for external social forces to intervene effectively in elderly care services. However, the case study of Qi'ao Island reveals that despite a high concentration of elderly residents and a substantial proportion of single-elderly households, leveraging historical community-based elderly care practices, emphasizing rural folk organizations related to the elderly, harnessing local traditions and cultural heritage, and encouraging elderly participation in cultural and educational activities can foster endogenous positive aging strategies tailored to local characteristics. These strategies focus on sustaining traditional elderly care practices within the community.Integrating elderly care into the broader context of community culture and regional development, while actively empowering the elderly, represents an effective approach to mitigating the strain on public elderly care resources in island communities.
