A Study on the Origin of the Name "Jiankang" in the Six Dynasties

摘　　要：西晋建兴元年的建康更名,是江左政权主导下的政治活动。原本的建业之名出于孙权对孙策过往功业的追忆与对自身既有功业的标榜,意在缺乏汉室合法性的支持下,强化江东集团内部的君臣关系,抬升秣陵县地于江东境域的形象与地位。西晋的“邺”字之改旨在从政治文书层面贬损孙吴旧都。江左政权既渴望在现实层面塑造出“安康”形象以抗衡乱世灾期,从而吸纳当时的晋室遗民,也希望通过追溯武帝太康之世的“康乐”记忆,强化时人对晋家天下的认同与支持,从而于吴地重建“晋国”。建康更名结束了西晋对该地的矮化过程,为后续建康重启帝都化进程奠定了基础。The renaming of city Jianye to Jiankang in the first year of the Jianxing era of the Western Jin Dynasty was a political activity led by the regime in Jiangzuo(the southern regions of the Yangzi River).The original name "Jianye" was chosen by Sun Quan to commemorate Sun Ce's past achievements and to highlight his own accomplishments,aiming to strengthen the monarch-subject relationship within the Jiangdong(lower Yangzi region) group and elevate the image and status of Moling County within the Jiangdong region,in the absence of legitimacy recognized from the Han regime.The change of the character to "Ye" by the Western Jin Dynasty was intended to devalue the former capital of the Wu kingdom.The regime in Jiangzuo not only yearned to project an image of "peace and health" in reality to counteract the calamities of the chaotic times and thereby attract the remaining loyalists of the Jin dynasty,but also hoped to reinforce people's identification with and support for the Jin dynasty by evoking memories of the "prosperous and happy" era of Emperor Wu's Taikang period,thus rebuilding the "Jin state" in Wu territory.The renaming of Jianye to Jiankang ended the process of belittling the city by the Western Jin Dynasty and laid the foundation for the subsequent resumption of Jiankang's journey towards becoming an imperial capital.
