Through the portrayal of the character Benedict,Russian novelist Tolstaya’s The Slynx delivers a tale that examines the themes of animalistic inclinations and human metamorphosis, painting a picture of a world enveloped in chaos and terror.Benedict,a modern intellectual with complex personality attributes, underwent subtle psychological changes and made contradictory ethical choices when faced with wealth, knowledge and power. The clash between animal, human, and divine factors and the interaction of animal, human, and divine nature form the basis of these ethical quandaries.Tolstaya presents several viewpoints on human nature and ethics that are common in Russian literature and religious philosophy,as well as the fragmentation and fate of human nature within the utopian setting of the novel, through the portrayal of Benedict.
