In the early 18th century, the expansion of the British Empire benefited not only from military actions led by John Churchill, the Duke of Marlborough, but also from less conspicuous trade goods, such as tea, products that later indirectly led to the Opium Wars.In Tim Barrow s play Union, the tea sifted out by Queen Anne symbolizes the allure of capital in the union between Scotland and England. As an exclusive access to fortune for the British Empire, overseas resources like tea became the straw to clutch at for Scotland to change its historically impoverished situation, indirectly leading to Scotland s renunciation of its political independence in 1707 and its active participation in the Empire s overseas trade and in the competition for overseas colonies with other European countries. The tea trade helped to witness the rise of the British Industrial Revolution and its burgeoning financial industry, whereas its history, intertwined with that of British colonization in Asian countries, has been tragic for these areas.Barrow s portrayal of tea in the play implies a different perspective, one that contrasts with the traditional English viewpoint, reflecting his unique national stance.
