The cult of Isis was introduced into Pompeii around the 1st century before common era.The citizens of Pompeii built a temple for Isis who came a long way from Egypt. This temple was first destroyed by an earthquake and the quickly rebuilt temple was then buried under the ashes of the Vesuvius until it was excavated in the second half of the 18th century. On the basis of the excavation material and the newest Demotic texts, the author tries to point out and prove that the ancient Egyptian goddess was not brought to simply contain the contents of the Roman religion, but because she could better fulfill the new religious requirements of the Pompeiians than any traditional Roman gods and goddesses.
