After the Opium War,Westerners in Shanghai, represented by the British, gradually transplanted the British model of animal protection to the Shanghai Concession and established the Shanghai Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals in 1898 to engage in related activities, which to a certain ex-tent promoted the spread of the concept of animal protection in modern China. However,as a society established by Western colonizers in the public concession of Shanghai, and later controlled by the Japanese invaders, the Society not only lacked respect for the Chinese people by emphasizing punishment rather than edu-cation in its animal protection activities, but also reflected a huge gap between“loving for the People”and“protecting Animals".Against the backdrop of star-vation and cold among a large number of people in modern China, the so-called“protecting animals”of the Westerners in Shanghai, who cared more for animals than for Chinese people, made the Westerners’animal protection activities in modern China stamped with the mark of colonialism.
