This article attempts to examine the Ming court's interest in falcons and their images during the Yongle and Xuande reigns(approx.15^(th)c.)in the context of its interactions with the Joseon dynasty(1392-1897).It focuses on showcasing the interactions between the emperors, eunuchs,as well as Joseon monarchs and officials surrounding this topic.By revealing this history, the article discusses the Ming court’s demand for tribute raptors from Joseon, their understanding of falcons, the practice of associating the visual imagery of a bird of prey with reality and paintings,as well as the coping strategies adopted by the Joseon monarchs and officials in response and their creation and use of relevant images. This article also attempts to further discuss the role of Ming eunuchs in the dissemination of raptors and their images. As important members of the“imperial court”,eunuchs were not only the actual operators of the raptor exchange network connecting the Ming and Joseon rulers during this period, but also the actual managers and owners of captive raptors raised in the Ming court. They were also appreciators and creators of relevant imagery.
