摘　　要：《改革年代》是美国著名历史学家理查德·霍夫施塔特最重要的著作。该书对19世纪末至20世纪初美国的政治文化做了总体性研究,其中涉及的诸多内容成为美国政治史研究的经典议题,激励历代历史学者对之进行再阐释。这一时期,美国也接收了人类历史前所未见的大规模外来移民。这些移民对美国社会影响深远。限于研究主题和当时学术语境,《改革年代》中涉及移民与美国政治文化互动的文字不多。在这些只言片语中,霍夫施塔特涉及当时美国移民的三个核心问题:政治参与、美国化和移民限制。霍氏的极简论述既不能充分反映移民对美国社会的冲击,也无法深入窥视美国社会对移民所施加的影响。事实上,移民与美国“改革年代”的各种社会运动桴鼓相应,在国族建构和国家建构两方面都具有转折性意义。The Age of Reform was one of the most important works of the renowned American historian Richard Hofstadter.It was a general study of American political culture in the United States from the late nineteenth century to the early twentieth century,and many of the issues it covered had become classic topics in American political history,inspiring successive generations of historical scholars to reinterpret them.During this period,the United States also received an influx of immigrants on a scale which was never seen in human history.These immigrants had profound impacts on American society.Limited by the subject matter and the scholarly context,not much was written in The Age of Reform about the interaction of immigrants with American politics and culture.However,Hofstadter touched three key issues central to American immigration:political participation,Americanization,and immigration restrictions.Hofstadter’s minimalist account neither adequately reflected the impact of immigration on American society,nor provided an in-depth glimpse of the influence that American society exerted on immigrants.In fact,immigrants had been closely associated with the social movements of the American“The Age of Reform,”which was a critical period in terms of both nation-building and state-building.
