A Study of Weizhou War Between the Tang and the Tubo

摘　　要：梳理唐蕃关系、中唐军事史、韦皋经营西川史,维州之战都是不能不提的重大事件。自西陲吐蕃强盛,唐时常与之作战,安史之乱前,唐朝与吐蕃互有胜负。但安史之乱至维州之战以前,唐朝由于国力衰弱而在对吐蕃作战中一直处于不利态势,西域、陇右大片土地沦陷,关中地区遭遇吐蕃军锋频繁侵扰,唐军在关中主战场无力反击,以被动防御姿态应对吐蕃的主动进攻,但效果不佳,关中战场形势不断恶化。而发生于唐德宗贞元十七年至贞元十八年的维州之战,唐朝不仅达成应援关中的战术目的,而且凭战略效果一举改变了唐与吐蕃军事冲突的模式,使唐朝的边疆态势趋于好转,扭转唐蕃双方力量对比态势,此后通过对关中防御体系的重新构建,国力逐渐衰弱的吐蕃已经无力大规模侵犯唐朝疆土,唐蕃双方的最终和平局面由此奠定了基础。To clarify the relationship between the Tang and the Tubo,the military history of the Mid-Tang Dynasty and the history of Wei Gao’s governing of southwest China,we have to mention Weizhou War as a major event.Since the Tubo became strong in the West,the Tang often fought against it.Prior to the An-Shi Rebellion,the battles between the Tang Dynasty and the Tubo basically maintained a balanced state,none of which won or lost greatly.However,in the period after the An-Shi Rebellion and before the Weizhou War,due to the weakening of the national strength,the Tang Dynasty was always in a disadvantaged position against the Tubo.Large areas of land in the Western Regions and Longyou Region were occupied.The Guanzhong area was frequently invaded by the army of Tubo.The Tang army was unable to fight back in the main battlefield of Guanzhong.It responded to the Tubo’s active attack with a passive defense posture,but the effect was poor,and the battlefield situation in Guanzhong continued to deteriorate.Yet in the Weizhou War that took place between the 17th and 18th years of Zhenyuan Period of Emperor Dezong of the Tang Dynasty,the Tang Dynasty not only achieved its tactical purpose of supporting Guanzhong,but also suddenly changed the mode of military conflict between the Tang and the Tubo by the strategic effect.Thus,the frontier situation of the Tang Dynasty tended to improve,reversing the comparison state of Tang and Tubo’s forces.After that,through the reconstruction of the defense system in Guanzhong,the Tubo became unable to invade the territory of the Tang Dynasty on a large scale because of its declining state power,which laid the foundation for the final peaceful situation between the Tang and the Tubo.
