The Belt and Road Initiative(BRI)is a top-tier national initiative put forward by China. The“Belt and Road”news discourse is not only a means of promoting the initiative but also a reflection of how it is perceived.Study on the news discourse of partner countries is conducive to a more comprehensive understanding of the international image of the BRI and thereby optimizing its communication strategies. This study selects mainstream media from the top trading partners with China along the Belt and Road routes in Asia,Europe and Africa, which includes Korea Times from South Korea,Pravda from Russia and Star from South Africa.News reports on the BRI in these media over the past five years were analyzed through Critical Discourse Analysis(CDA)to identify the characteristics of the coverage. The study finds that the news reports from different countries vary in terms of thematic focus, emotional orientation and source types. Therefore,we further explore the reasons behind these differences in discursive construction, and provide suggestions for future research.
