Chinese handwriting culture, both in terms of quantity and quality, reached its zenith in the medieval period(between the third and the tenth centuries),before the broad diffusion of printing culture in the eleventh century caused a general decline in the quality of manuscript production. On the one hand,Buddhism stimulated the mass production of manuscripts. On the other, calligraphy art experienced remarkable development due to affection by literati. In this way,not only did the standard,semi-cursive and cursive scripts reach maturity, but also the"Two Wangs"calligraphic system was gradually established, dominating the history of Chinese calligraphy era afterera. This article analyses the multifaceted influence of medieval handwriting culture on the evolution of calligraphy art with a focus on calligraphic creation, reproduction and collecting.Furthermore, this article examines the fundamental conditions and factors that contributed to the zenith of medieval Chinese calligraphy, while considering the manuscript cultures and calligraphic traditions ofothercivilizations.
