“五花马”新辨

摘　　要：历来对唐人诗歌中提及的“五花马”主要有两种解释,即“五色马”和“五鬃马”。此二说皆有不妥之处,难以令人信服。“五花马”之名源自相马术,古人通过马匹的旋毛等特征判断其良督、吉凶,而良马旋毛有五处“善旋”。随着相马术在民间的广泛流传,五处“善旋”便逐渐演变为“五花马”,成了珍贵宝马的一种代称。There have been two popular explanations for wuhuama in the poems of the Tang Dynasty,i.e.five-colored horse and five-maned horse.Both definitions are not perfect and unconvincing.The name of wuhuama originated from horse physiognomy,by which the ancient people judged the horse through the hair on and around its head.A good horse usually has the hair of five“good circles”.With the widespread horse physiognomy,a horse with hair of five“good circles”was gradually referred to as wuhuama,becoming a label of the good horse.
