In the process of building a socialist modernized strong country, narrowing the income gap among rural households is a key goal in achieving comprehensive common prosperity.Based on the construction of research hypotheses, this paper uses the 2019 China Household Finance Survey(CHFS)data to investigate the mechanisms through which the credit environment alleviates rural household income inequality. The study finds that a favorable credit environment can significantly reduce income inequality among rural households.Mediation effect regressions indicate that the credit environment alleviates income inequality by promoting rural household entrepreneurship and digital financial participation.Heterogeneity analysis shows that, compared to farmers with high financial literacy, the credit environment is more effective in reducing income inequality among those with low financial literacy. Moreover, the credit environment is less effective in alleviating income inequality among necessity-driven entrepreneurs. The research findings provide micro-level evidence to better understand the mechanisms through which the credit environment alleviates income inequality among rural households.
