古尔纳《赞美沉默》中的空间记忆与身份建构

摘　　要：在古尔纳长篇小说《赞美沉默》中,无名的叙述者流转于多个空间以追求身份建构,不同空间承载的各式记忆促就了他身份的嬗变。作为少数族裔被排斥的创伤记忆在英国社会空间中日渐累积,最终触发了叙述者的身份焦虑。沉淀于桑给巴尔家园空间中的历史记忆呼唤离群游子,但故土改貌注定为叙述者的身份追寻旅途奠下悲剧基调。叙述者个人记忆在阈限之地“第三空间”拟定的社会框架中汇聚成流散群体的集体记忆,为叙述者创设了归属感,终使其完成混杂身份的建构。《赞美沉默》中叙述者的身份变迁历程,呈现出空间记忆与身份问题的动态生成机制,可视为古尔纳流散小说中,空间记忆流变促成身份建构这一经典主题的具体表征,彰显了他对现实少数族裔移民问题的文学关怀。This paper examines how the nameless narrator moves through multiple spaces in identity construction in Gurnah’s novel Admiring Silence.It is held that the various memories carried by different spaces facilitate the transformation of the diasporic identity.The traumatic memory of being an ethnic minority and being excluded accumulates in the British social space,which eventually triggers the narrator’s identity anxiety.The historical memory deposited in the home space of Zanzibar calls for the stragglers,but the unrecognizable home space is destined to set the tragic tone for the narrator’s journey of identity pursuit.The personal memory of the narrator converges into the collective memory of the diaspora in the social framework drawn up by the threshold Third Space,which creates a sense of belonging for the narrator and finally completes the construction of his mixed identity.The identity evolution of the narrator in Admiring Silence presents a dynamic generation mechanism of spatial memory and identity problems,which can be regarded as a concrete representation of the classic theme of identity construction in Gurnah’s diaspora novels,and demonstrates his literary concern for the real ethnic minority immigration.
