Curtains and screens were common furnishings in the imperial palace of the Song Dynasty, frequently utilized in ceremonial settings.Within the domain of imperial power, emperors and empress dowagers behind curtains employed these physical barriers to achieve political objectives, such as concealing the emperor’s embarrassment or obstructing communication with officials.Curtains also created a political space where the empress dowager could exercise imperial authority.Screens similarly functioned as spatial dividers, demarcating interior and exterior zones, with the enclosed area reserved exclusively for imperial power.Rulers of the Song Dynasty leveraged these spatially divided zones to manipulate information exchange, underscoring the political utility of curtains and screens beyond mere ceremonial purposes.
