摘  要:终于,在打破近十年周期性缺席纽约新年活动的“恶习”后,我总算有机会参与“原型艺术节”(Prototype Festival)了。这是一个每年1月在纽约举行的(甚至是在疫情肆虐的三年期间)、让大家深度思考“什么是歌剧”的传统项目。So after nearly a decade of not being around New York during New Year’s,I finally made it back to Prototype,the festival where people ponder the question“What is opera?”pretty much every January,give or take a pandemic.A century ago,when Toscanini laid down his baton after the final notes Puccini actually penned of Turandot,most people in the Western world knew exactly what opera is.The idea of a through-composed musical narrative,held together in an orchestral framework and performed by singers in a recognizably cultivated style(whatever the language)remained part of popular culture for many decades,even when it was mimicked and parodied.
