As a renowned kiln site in the north during the Tang and Song dynasties, the Yaozhou Kiln has unearthed a rich variety of tea wares, which could reflect the evolution of tea-drinking culture at that time. In the Tang Dynasty, tea wares of Yaozhou Kiln were primarily made with black glaze and tea-dust glaze, and encompassed a wide range of utensils such as tea grinders, pestles and mortars, tea kettles, and ewers, showing the coexistence of boiling tea and whisking tea. In the Song Dynasty, tea wares were mainly produced in celadon and black glazes, with a focus on practicality and decorative appeal. The whisking tea became dominant, and the design of tea wares became more refined. Dark-colored tea wares like black-glazed bowls became popular due to the prevalent tea competition. The evolution of Yaozhou Kiln tea wares embodies profound changes in Tang and Song tea-drinking culture, representing development in social customs, aesthetic values, and craftsmanship, showcasing the important status and far-reaching influence of tea culture in social culture.
